Space breakdown
- Always go one size up if your required sq footage is within 10% of a tent's maximum.
- Frame tents can go on any surface (concrete, asphalt, decking). Pole tents require staking into grass.
- Clearspan / structure tents have zero interior poles — every sq ft is usable floor space.
- Add sidewalls, flooring, HVAC, and lighting — discuss these with your rental company as they affect layout.
- The 10% buffer in this calculator accounts for tent poles and general circulation. Wide aisles may need more.

How to Choose the Right Tent Size for Your Event
Choosing the right tent size is one of the most important decisions when planning an outdoor event. Too small and your guests feel cramped; too large and you're paying for space you don't need. The right size depends on three factors: guest count, event layout, and any additional features like a dance floor, stage, or bar. Use our free tent size calculator above to get an instant recommendation.
Square Footage Per Person: The Basic Rule
The standard rule for tent sizing is 10–15 sq ft per person for a seated dinner with round tables, 6–8 sq ft for a cocktail reception with standing guests, and 8–10 sq ft for a seated ceremony or theater-style layout. Always add 20–30% for pathways, a head table, buffet station, bar, or dance floor.
Common Tent Types Explained
Frame tents have no center poles, making them ideal for hard surfaces like parking lots or patios. Pole tents have a classic peaked look and require staking into grass — they're popular for weddings. Clearspan / structure tents are engineered aluminum structures with no interior poles, best for large events over 200 guests. High-peak tents offer elegant peaks on each bay and work on either surface.
